Reflect on the work you did to collect information for the Brick work. What value do you see in this tool?
The brick analysis I conducted was on the social media platform called Instagram. I chose Instagram because I personally love sharing my story and the story of my classroom. Teachers and leadership work hard to create an environment that is safe, productive and efficient for student learning, why not share it to promote this effort and take it beyond classroom newsletters and end of the year DVD’s? This analysis gives us a perspective of our current state and how we can improve and move toward our future/desired state. Our current state consists of sharing our personal story and photos of our classroom through a district hosted website. This has been an inefficient platform to share because people are not able to engage as you can in a social media platform such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Instagram is a great way to uniquely share our classroom stories and see what other teachers are doing with their students. Teachers tend to get isolated in their classrooms and Instagram can bring a greater sense of community amongst the teachers and parents as they are able to follow along with their child’s classroom activities one picture/video at a time.
There is also value in the brick analysis because we can identify applications we no longer need, therefore saving money. I’ve learned that many applications currently in use such as KidBlog and classroom sites through the district will become obsolete once social media is embraced as a learning tool and not something that should be feared. I’ve also learned that this new application can lead to more learning opportunities such as the addition of photo filters to bring uniqueness to a profile. Instagram can extend our current technology (ipads, ipods, apple products, etc.) and bring real world experiences to our students and parents. This type of analysis could be beneficial to our organization because it helps determine our current state and plan out the future state. Where are we going? Where do we want to go? What can we put in place now that will give us the necessary experience to lead us toward our goal? This process also helps us eliminate any applications that will no longer be necessary when applications are implemented that has mult-solutions.
