Summary
This Ted Talk is about a 13 year old teen named Logan LaPlante who is talking about his homeschooling experience. First of all, this teen is very impressive and I’m beginning to see Ted Talks speakers get younger and younger every year. LaPlante speaks about how public schools do not teach happiness or health the same way they teach literacy. His argument is that health and happiness should be just as urgent as literacy. I agree, happiness is a goal or something we try to pursue as adults. We read books, we take vacations, we search for spirituality and religion, meditation and the list goes on. LaPlante says, adults ask kids what they want to be when they grow up and when they answer “happy,” it’s not a valid response. Adults assume kids will be happy so the response they’re looking for is in a field or profession.
Homeschool
LaPlante’s mother made the decision and risk to remove her child from public school at the age of 9. A difficult decision and was even called crazy by her friends and other parents. LaPlante thanks her for this risky move as he's living a life that makes him happy as he's doing things that people only do outside of school hours such as work experience, hands-on experience instead of just reading it in a book, following his creativity, experimenting, making mistakes, spirituality, real world experiences, clothing design and sewing. He writes about what he loves, such as skiing and he completes most of his writing assignments at Starbucks just like many adults. He even spends one day per week in the outdoors exploring life.
Reflection
I believe what LaPlante's mom did was such an amazing move because her child is succeeding in this platform. Public school was not for them, home schooling is their lane. However, can this work for every child? I don't think it would be the best for every child, it takes a lot of energy from the parent or parents to sacrifice most of their day and invest it in their child. Parents have to transition from parents to teacher which is a tough job. Most parents have to work due to their finances or lack of support if they're a single parent household and would be unable to home school. I applaud LaPlante's parents, they are investing in their child and sacrificing their time which is paying off. LaPlante is 13 years old, already had a Ted Talk and has the routine of a young adult. He understands his inspiration, motivation and most importantly, he understands what makes him happy.
